It’s the First of the Month

Holy cow…it’s July already! Literally halfway through the year. How crazy is that? (Yes, I realize it’s the 4th, not the 1st – just go with it – Happy 4th of July!)

I feel like summer is already going way too quickly and with my weekends filling up, I’m afraid fall will be here before we know it. That said, I do love Fall most of all (but if there’s no Browns season – I may be curled up in a ball every Sunday).

But all in all, not a bad way to start off the month of July. I’m in the process of making my next big decision which has been scary and exciting, all at the same time. Being a grown-up is serious work!

This weekend was fun-filled including a trip to Playhouse Square to see Jersey Boys. If you haven’t been able to catch a musical lately, I highly suggest this one. The story is fantastic, the acting is superior and the singing…A-mazing. Literally, they sounded just like the real Four Seasons.

Sunday night included a trip to Crocker Park where little did I know that everyone on the west side was going to also be. The Cleveland Pops Orchestra performed a concert in the middle of the “square” (for lack of a better term) and fireworks followed. Which literally happened right above us. It was one of the better displays I’ve seen AND I ran into a ton of friends which was also an added benefit!

And I was super excited on Monday to meet up with a friend from college, Amanda and her husband Josh. We visited East 4th and went to the House of Blues for dinner (since literally everyone had the same idea pre-Indians game). It’s always great to catch up with old friends and this reminded me of that! (Even if they are Yankees fans….)

And now into another week we go. And it’s also Bachelorette time (which btw: how happy was I that Mickey left last week?! Good job Mickey – Cleveland is proud of you)!

Growing Up

I remember back in high school I thought for sure I knew what I wanted to be when I “grew up”. I was going to go to school and become an amazing teacher, get married (before 24 was my goal) and start popping out kids around age 25.

Then I got to college. And I hated being in a classroom. I didn’t like being surrounded by little kids that had snot and dirt and tugged at your expensive clothes. Nothing about that was fun. And it didn’t matter the age level – hated it all. So I changed my major to Business Communications. Which would have been awesome except I transferred and the college I went to only had Business or Communication. I went the Business route at first until I ended up wanting to crawl into fetal position at the mention of Accounting. Along came another major change (with this one also came the threat from my parents to get my stuff together). So Communication it was. I always enjoyed writing so it seemed like a natural fit.

Somewhere along the way I decided I was meant to work in nonprofit work. I think it was a conversation with the BFF when I realized I wanted to help him (note: the BFF has MS). The BFF and I have had more conversations than I ever wanted to about what he was going to miss out on due to this disease and I listened to him cry (or cried with him) more times than I can count. I knew I was never going to be a doctor and find the cure for MS so raising money to fund the cure seemed like the next option.

(The BFF and I at the Annual Thanksgiving Kegger Party in 2005 – he inspires me)

Here’s the thing they don’t tell you when you decide you are going to have a concentration in nonprofit administration – it sucks. It’s long hours, awful pay and a lot of rejection. People say no to giving money. They hate when you call to ask for more money numerous times. It doesn’t matter how different the “packaging” is (event, letter or phone call), people know what you want. The dolla dolla bills. Also, you probably aren’t just fundraising…you are also the PR person, the Marketing person and fill in for a variety of other roles.

Post-college though I was ready and willing. I had an amazing internship with the Cleveland Domestic Violence Center and one with the American Cancer Society. While both were difficult, I learned a lot. Both were more hands on than most internships that my friends had. While they were making copies, I was handling committee meetings, writing grants and visiting community leaders.

But after 6 years of fundraising, marketing and public relations for nonprofits, I was completely burned out. So much so that I stopped fundraising for the organization that pushed me down this career path (National MS Society). After fundraising all day, I had no energy to go home and fundraise some more. I was exhausted.

So I changed careers and went down the advertising and PR route. And to date its one of the best decisions I’ve made. Yes, it’s hard work too and can be long hours but it’s very different. The pace is different. The people are different.

And the best part – I can fundraise for the MS Society again. Like I’ve always wanted to do. It’s an organization that I truly put my support in. They take a dollar and stretch it to the max which I admire because I know how hard that can be. They’re on the cutting edge of research and provide so much care and support for those living with MS. But beyond that, they offer support to those who’s loved ones are living with the disease.

And no this isn’t a “give me money for the MS Society post” (though if you feel so led, let me know!). This is about finding what you are passionate about. And making mistakes. And feeling so exhausted that you don’t know what you want to do, nor do you really care. But you pull yourself together and figure it out. And along the way, I really do think that you learn more about yourself and what really makes you tick – in both the positive and negative ways.

Have you had an experience similar? Did it make you stronger/help you figure “things” out?

Be Inspired

I’m a words girl. I love writing – always have. The word inspiration or inspire has always been one of my favorites. It’s in my house. My office. Notepads and pens. I like to be reminded of that word often.

And Saturday, my whole day was spent being inspired. After picking out my perfect Summer Solstice outfit (more coming on that), I went down to Ohio City to visit Valerie Mayen’s “The Yellowcake Shop Pop-Up Shop“. The minute I walked in, I was inspired. Valerie’s design aesthetic is amazing and the shop was a true testament to her and her personality. Her accessories are adorable and there are at least two dresses and skirts that I feel are must haves in my closet. If you haven’t checked out Yellowcake yet, I highly suggest it (plus she has a cupcake and milk bar – LOVE).

For a little more on Valerie, check out her speech from TEDxCLE. Two things that I love about this: Valerie’s perspective on community and her genuine, heart-wrenching and brutal honesty. When she spoke of her own personal community and her own personal fear and desire (which is the same as mine), I was brought to tears.

Post Yellowcake, it was time to get ready and meet up with my group going to the Summer Solstice Party…aka the BEST party in Cleveland. The party that kicks off the summer season. And also the party with the BEST people watching Cleveland has to offer. As of last night, I heard that more than 4,000 people attended. Somehow in the midst of all those people, I happened to run into a few of my favorite bloggers, Cleveland’s a Plum and CLE Shopaholic (yet somehow I managed not to run into Happy in CLE…) and Valerie Mayen.

The fashion was fantastic (speaking of, check out how Valerie suggested I style my dress – the pin is from Yellowcake – which received fab reviews from Cleveland Scene’s fashion editor!), the food and drinks were delish.

The music was exactly what you would want to hear at the Cleveland Art Museum. Plus, walking around the museum at night is one of the best experiences you can have. I can’t speak highly enough of this event. I’m already counting down until next year. Add Summer Solstice to my list of things that I love about the CLE! (Below are some pics from the Art Museum’s Twitter Account, as I was a bad blogger and didn’t take many pictures.)

(Note: I loved this band! They had everyone dancing, include these two adorable senior citizens that were standing near us!)

Social-Ness

Again, I’ve been meaning to blog all week but just could not focus enough to actually do that. It was a crazy busy week which included my first business trip to the always fabulous Shelbyville, IN – home of the Cow Palace.

Earlier in this week (Monday to be exact), I was sitting in my cube with Twitter up on my screen (which is not abnormal). I sat down with my Grande Starbucks and looked up and saw a tweet from my morning show, “Toohey and Fee” to tweet if you’d like to join them in the Social Suite – which of course, I’ve blogged about before. A tweet later and a direct message and I won two tickets to join Allan Fee in the Social Suite Tuesday night.

I absolutely love the Social Suite (and am mayor) but the thing I loved the most about Tuesday night was the group that came out and joined Allan. First of all, Alan is hilarious and a blast himself. Throw in some fellow tweeters, including blogger Poise in Parma, beer and food thanks to Allan, it was bound to be a wonderful night.

Yes, the Indians lost. But we got to watch the game in style, including the awesome lightning storm that was occurring over downtown in the 8th and 9th innings. We laughed, we tweeted and we left with some new friends.

(Updated Social Suite pic…afterall, I am the mayor…though I’m wondering if @tribetalk is going to de-invite me again since they lose every game I’ve been to so far…)

In other news: Saturday is looking to be a fabulous day/evening in the CLE. I’m starting the day off going to the Yellowcake Shop Pop-Up Shop in Ohio City. How can you not love Valerie? Her fashion line is fabulous AND she has milk and cupcakes in her pop-up! I highly suggest swinging by and trying on a dress or two, or checking out the newest accessories. Saturday evening I’ll be joining hundreds of other Clevelanders for the Cleveland Art Museum’s Summer Solstice Party. Expect pictures and updates later in the weekend!

This weekend: get out, enjoy the weather, visit some of Cleveland’s locally owned shops (including Yellowcake or Dredgers Union) and have fun!

Disclaimer: via Twitter, I received two tickets to attend the Indians game in the Social Suite with Toohey and Fee of Q104 Cleveland. However, thoughts and opinions are my own and I really do love Toohey and Fee 🙂

That’s a Wrap

Why do weekends go so quickly? I’m seriously curious over that especially after an awesome weekend. I actually took some PTO Friday afternoon so had a little bit of an extended weekend with a visitor from Fort Wayne. So of course, I had to show off my city a little bit.

Friday: Hit up B Spot Burgers in Strongsville. Yes, just as good as the one in Eton that I was at last week. It just intensifies my Michael Symon crush when I go to his restaurants.

Post dinner we headed to the Gordon Square District and to one of my favorite bars where one of my favorite bartenders (Harrison) works: XYZ the Tavern. I have yet to have a negative experience at XYZ and love going back for new drinks or to try more of their delicious menu.

Saturday was a jam packed day (which included breakfast…thanks Chris!) We headed off to the annual Duct Tape Festival, watched the parade and visited with some lovely coworkers.

Then we headed off to somewhere I seriously have not been since either middle school or high school, the Cleveland Museum of Art. Can I just say, what is wrong with me? I absolutely loved the museum and really we could have probably spent hours and hours there.

I really think I need to plan another visit in the near future, not to mention hitting up some other museums in Cleveland. Maybe even the Cleveland Orchestra this summer? Anyone want to join?

Saturday night included a gorgeous night on East 4th (which everyone knows is one of my favorite places in the CLE).

And now we’re back to Sunday and I’m mentally attempting to prepare for the work week ahead, which will include my first client trip (a road trip with one of my coworkers….I’m thinking a country mix will need to be played at some point).

To end the wonderful weekend off: my new country summer song – Jake Owen’s “Barefoot Blue Jean Night”. This song just feels like a cold beer, sun, baseball, driving with my sunroof open and bonfires with friends. Summer is already going too quickly…

Only in Ohio

There are a certain number of things you can only do in Ohio, specifically Cleveland. For instance: check out the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, see the world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra, or have access to three Michael Symon (my crush) restaurants.

One more thing you can only find in Ohio: The Duct Tape Festival. No, I’m not kidding. And this weekend that’s where you will be able to find me. At least in the morning for the annual Duct Tape Festival Parade. I have quite a few friends who live in Avon, where the Festival is, and I gotta say every year they talk about the Festival. This includes friends that are married with kids, single or grandparents. Last year, I babysat during Festival for some friends and literally sent the two older kids off to Festival where they had the best time while I was at home with the baby. It’s literally for everyone.

So if you are looking for something this gorgeous Cleveland (I hope) weekend: consider checking it out! Food, rides, parade and entertainment…can’t go wrong!

Oops…

I’ve been a bad blogger the past week. I apologize! Life has been stressful. Family issues and what not. (Additional note: This blog has taken me at least 2 hours to write due to the Mavs/Heat game. CavsForMavs.)

But I’m back and feeling good after a fun, eventful weekend. I have more deep thoughts to post about but not feeling that tonight. I mean it took me a good 6 hours today to get some cleaning and laundry done. Deep thoughts – just not there.

So Friday, my coworker Sean (happyinCLE) and I went to visit our good friend Lisa at her fabulous new job. She works in PR for Stark Enterprises and we went to B Spot for dinner at Eton. I haven’t been to Eton in awhile so it was great to see the new stores opening, as well as restaurants.

To start with: B Spot…FABULOUS! I’ve admitted it – I have a little crush on Michael Symon. I mean, he’s just so cute with that laugh. And after eating at B Spot, I’m in love. The burgers were fantastic, fries were great and the milkshakes were to die for! Awesome job B Spot!

We enjoyed walking around, laughing and the gorgeous Cleveland weather. Of course, Lisa was a fabulous tour guide! Can’t wait to go back to Eton (potentially this week for the VIP opening of the Dr. Seuss art show).

Saturday was just as busy as the rest of the week has been. I participated in the Olmsted Falls Relay for Life event as a survivor where I was able to walk the Survivor Lap and meet some awesome community members. If you have never attended or participated in a Relay, let me tell you it is by far one of the most emotional fundraisers you can attend. The survivor lap is emotional, as well as the luminary lap where people remember those that have passed away due to cancer.

Saturday evening my country side came out at the Indians Music Festival, featuring Blake Shelton and Brad Paisley. And for this concert, I went country including wearing the cowboy hat. It was a fabulous concert and the rain held off.

Today, my motivation level not so high but at least I’m watching the Mavs win this Finals game and I seriously feel as though the Cavs are playing this game. So much for going to bed early.

Blog more this week, promise!

A swing and a hit

Unfortunately the Indians have just not been playing the best baseball ever the last couple days. However, that doesn’t mean I’m still not a huge fan and loving this season. It’s just a little slump, like I keep reminding the guys of at work who are being downers and getting worried about the season. The Indians are currently the only team over .600 and we can’t be freaking out over a couple of games.

That said, I had an awesome weekend of baseball. Thursday I ended up getting lower reserve tickets, for FREE, from a friend. It was a gorgeous night for baseball until the sun set and I was freezing as I sat next to Choo in left field.

Friday, Lisa and I ventured off to Greenhouse Tavern (YUM!) before heading to the Indians Social Suite. Since the last time I was in the Suite, it was a torrential downpour, I was invited back. There was a great group in the Suite and it was a great night for baseball.

The Indians lost but once the 9th inning hit we all felt like we were winning as Curtis (Dir. of Comm. for the Indians) took us down to the visitors dugout to watch the post-game fireworks. Talk about an awesome benefit to being in the suite! Plus it was “Tweener Pop Music Night”…who doesn’t love that?

I can’t speak highly enough of the Indians Marketing Department and what an awesome job they are doing at connecting with fans via social media. Keep up the great work!

(Disclaimer: The Indians tickets were complimentary in return for tweeting, Facebooking and blogging about Cleveland and our awesome baseball team. All opinions are my own.)

My Favorites for Summatime

Once May and/or June hits my calendar, it’s time to start shopping. And no, not just for clothes (though of course, I need some new summer clothes…like fun summer dresses and cute Express shorts and maxi dresses….and now I’ll stop). But there are quite a few products I insist on using throughout the summer, as far as beauty products go.

I’m almost completely Irish, naturally blonde with blue eyes…which also means super fair skin. Which means to tan, I need to spray tan. I’ve found an awesome spa which offers Tan with Kare. Options in Fairview Park does a great job and has reasonable pricing. And since I physically am unable to tan, I use sunscreen. And I use it pretty much everyday. Because if I don’t…it’s a painful experience that I really would rather not go through (not to mention, I’d prefer not to be wrinkly or deal with skin cancer – thyroid cancer was enough). My sunscreen of choice is usually Neutrogena UltraSheer…doesn’t feel caked on and smells much better than the usual sunscreens.

When it comes to the sun though, I love it. I love being outside and love being with friends outside. As I’ve mentioned, I’m naturally blonde. Look at any recent pics of me and you will see, I’m much closer to brunette these days. Yes, I have serious issues with dying my hair. I dye it often and highlight and lowlight my hair. But Aveda has the best product to protect my hair in from the summer sun – Sun Care Protective Mist. Really any Aveda sun product does a great job, but I’ve fallen in love with this mist. I also use the hair “cleanser” as well as the mask during the summer. It lasts almost the entire summer and has a great scent.

Another must, especially now that my hair is getting longer, is hair ties to pull my hair back when it’s hot outside. I recently discovered these hair coils which work perfectly. Messy ponytail tends to be my look of the season unless I’m sporting the Victoria Beckham bob (which I did 2 years ago).

A little unknown fact about me, I have curly/wavy hair. And with the heat, it tends to get ridiculous. Again, now that my hair is getting longer again this isn’t as much of an issue as it used to be. Thank you to Aussie Spray. I swear by this stuff. A teeny bit of gel (your choice) and spraying this throughout my hair after a shower and I’m good to go. Occasionally I throw back a headband just to control any loose pieces but including that, it takes me less than 10 minutes to get my curls under control and ready to go. Which sounds so much better than blowdrying and straightening my hair when it’s 110 degrees out.

But seriously folks, don’t forget to lather up this summer. No one really wants to deal with cancer of any type. Plus, do you really want to be wrinkly and old-looking before you turn 40?!

p.s. This girl is hanging out in the Indians Social Suite again on Friday. Look for updates from the suite via Twitter on Friday night! Indians, gorgeous weather, social suite and fireworks….perfect Friday nigh!
