Iron Chef America and Cleveland

I know I’ve blogged before about Cleveland’s awesome restaurant scene and tonight we get to see one of our own in action on Food Network. And I’m beyond excited. I’ll be cheering on our own Jonathan Sawyer from The Greenhouse Tavern with lots of other Clevelanders tonight.

If you haven’t been to Greenhouse or Noodlecat (Chef Sawyer’s other gem!) you are missing out on some of the best that Cleveland has to offer. I absolutely love Greenhouse, especially in the summer when the rooftop bar is open and you can see all that East 4th Street has to offer.

So tonight (10pm EST), tune in, set your DVR and follow the live tweeting while we cheer on one of the best! (#teamsawyer).

(Plus, as my LS coworkers know, I love a good Tweet-Up.)

This week: tune in for my Iron Chef review, my first day jitters at the new job and my Fabulous Friday edition focusing on two of my favorite Clevelanders.

Fabulous Friday: Memories and New Beginnings

For Fabulous Friday this week it’s announcement time…

I’m heading to a new advertising/PR agency! I’m excited to be joining Adcom as a Senior Account Executive starting Monday. It was a super tough decision that I wrestled with for a long week/weekend but I’m so excited for this opportunity.

Not to mention….I’ll be joining The Dawg’s Dish (Alana) and two other friends. Which of course, helps to make the transition a little bit smoother and more comfortable. I can’t wait for Starbucks trips with my friend Laura (we were previously coworkers and this was a daily routine) and lunches with the girls (including my friend Lisa, who literally works across a parking lot).

But honestly, I gotta thank some of my coworkers for being one a part of one of the best learning experiences I’ve had. I’ve worked with one of the best creative teams and have so many amazing memories (including some hilarious road trips and after hours events). I’m lucky to not just walk away with memories, but with some friendships that will last a lifetime.

So to my LS Crew: Here’s to Ke$ha, Nerf Gun Wars, Beer Meetings, chasing Joe Haden down at the Indians game, Shelbyville Road Trips, Starbucks trips and hours of laughter that I’ll never forget. Cheers to our next chapter!

Jumping Back

It’s called the “party of the year” by so so many of my friends. I missed it last year due to waiting to buy tickets and it being sold out.

It’s the annual Playhouse Square “Jump Back Ball“!

I’ve been dying to go and this year is finally the year. I’m beyond excited. So many awesome tweeps and fellow bloggers have already been talking about it and now that I’ve started to make plans, I’m counting down till the end of February.

How can you go wrong with this event – great people, dancing on stage at Playhouse, amazing food and a martini ice bar? Not to mention, you’ll be helping to raise money for Playhouse Square – one of Cleveland’s gems.

Now that I’ve decided I’m going, I’ve started to shop for dresses. I’m debating renting the runway but have a few other options I’m going to look into first. Some of my favorites:

If you are even slightly interested, get moving! You don’t wanna miss this event and tickets sell out before the event on the 25th!

Stress and Insomnia

I’ve been a bad blogger the past few days. I’ve been meaning to write – really, I have. But my stress-level has been the highest it’s been in a long time for a number of reasons. And I’ve developed insomnia over the past two weeks.

The upside? About 10 of my twitter friends also have insomnia so there have been multiple tweets about it, including at 3am when we are all wide awake. Last night was the first night since January 1st that I slept more than 3 hours. I was finally to the point of pure exhaustion last night and slept 7 full wonderful hours.

Anyone else have this happen when they are stressed out or upset over something? Cause it’s seriously the worst. I’m hoping after last night this means that I’ll be back into regular sleeping habits.

Goals for 2012

I prefer not to call these resolutions for 2012, but rather goals. So here we go (please note: I realize I’m about a week behind on posting these, but better late than never):

1. Start eating healthier. This also includes just eating in general. My co-workers will tell you that I am awful about skipping lunch. Breakfast is typically a granola bar and a venti Starbucks (and that’s if we are lucky). Lunch is non-existent (which I’m sure other PR/Advertising Pros will tell you happens often). Afternoon snack is typically either a Diet Coke or another Starbucks. This needs to change. And I want to start actually bringing my lunch – in order to save $$. Working downtown and eating lunch downtown can get expensive!

2. Focus on my career. I pretty much already do that but I want to continue to focus on this area of my life.

3. Focus on my faith. I need to start going to church more often again. End of story.

4. Meet more Twitter friends. I love social networking and have met some amazing new friends through Twitter. I can’t wait to attend more Tweet-ups and have more coffee/drink dates with friends from Twitter!

5. Shop local. This past Christmas, I made this a goal and I didn’t do too bad at all. I want to continue to engage in Cleveland’s awesome local shops. The Made in the 216 event was one of my favorites from 2011 and I can’t see what else Danielle from DU has up her sleeves for 2012!

6. Stop focusing on the little things and think big picture. Yes, sometimes life doesn’t go the way I want – I need to stop focusing on those little things though.

7. Be patient. Patience is a virtue I tend to not have. Whether it be in my personal life, career or with others. I really want to start being more patient with others and with myself.

8. Take my medication. Every day. 2011 was a bit of an issue when it came to my medication. This year, I must be better. And I must attend all doctors appointments – even the scary cancer follow-up appointments. After all, only three more years and I’ll officially be”cancer-free”.

More than anything, I wanna live life by this quote (thanks to The Daily Balance for sharing):

“Don’t wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what. Get started now.”

Cleveland’s Best of 2011

Two weeks ago Cleveland Scene announced the reasons that 2011 was the Year That We Did Not Suck (we being Cleveland).

I have to agree – it was a fantastic year for our fantastic city. Some of the highlights:

West 25th was revitalized. I absolutely love West 25th area and Ohio City, as I know a lot of you from Cleveland do. The bar and restaurant scene, as well as the pop-up shots had me visiting a ton in 2011 and I’m looking forward to more visits in 2012.

Downtown got delicious – ain’t that the truth? Working downtown this year, I can testify to this one. I’ve loved going to the downtown restaurants and am anxiously awaiting for Zach Bruell’s latest (seriously – counting down!). And after New Year’s Eve Weekend, Viaduct Lounge is one of my new favorites.

The Heart of the City is Beating. As someone who lives in the city and is very close to downtown, it makes me so happy when I see people out and about downtown. There’s so much to do in the city, besides just attending sporting events (though that’s one of the big things that I do) and there’s plenty of places to go. I can’t wait to see Cleveland continue to grow this year.

Food Trucks – who knew right? Cleveland blew other cities out of the water and established the Food Truck scene in the city. Hodge Podge and Dim and Den Some are my two favorites but there’s so many others the city has to offer. And thanks to Hodge Podge being featured on The Great Food Truck Race on Food Network, Cleveland gained some serious exposure. Awesome job, Chef Hodgson and team!

I can’t wait to see what 2012 has to offer our fabulous city!

Are you a PR Pro?

So PR Daily recently reposted this blog from earlier the year and when I reread it, I realized my life has become this. Just a few of the ones that stick out to me are the following (chime in fellow PR/Advertising/Marketing Pros and tell me which ones you fall into):

1. Your day starts and ends with a cup of coffee. – Ain’t that the truth. Usually it’s two to three cups a day and Starbucks knows my morning and afternoon drink schedule.

2. You can power-walk in 5-inch heels with your laptop bag while checking your BlackBerry. – True story but rather than a BlackBerry it’s my iPhone.

3. Inside jokes with your colleagues will get you through the day—especially the insanely stressful ones. – Thank the heavens I adore my coworkers cause there are days I really would not get through without some of our jokes or quick “That’s what she said” one-liners.

4. You are so used to putting the client first that you usually forget to eat lunch. – This happens way more often than it should. I need to work on this.

5. You can toggle among a PowerPoint presentation, a press release, Twitter strategy, and PSA outlines—all in an hour. – Absolutely. Gotta do what you gotta do!

6. You recite billing codes in your sleep. – This happens. And I often add up my hours and coworkers hours based on their billable rate to make sure that I’m within budget…occasionally while sitting in meetings.

7. You preface Happy Hour with: “Sorry, I need to keep my phone on the table. I have to be connected to email and phone just in case.” – I actually don’t do this one, mostly because my friends that I’m at Happy Hour with already know this is going to happen, or that they will be doing the same.

8. You proudly put “PR pro” in your Twitter bio, knowing it’s the one place you don’t have to explain your job. – True story.

9. “Relax” time is in the shower when you always seem to come up with the best PR pitches. (Source) – What? There’s no way I’m the only one!

10. After your coffee, you spend 20 minutes deleting Google Alerts of clients, competitors, and everything in between. (Source) – Usually this is done before I leave the house.

11. You start your day by digging out of client and competitor alerts and checking email, all before you’re out of bed. (Source) – Usually done while laying in bed, before turning on the news and hopping in the shower.

12. You check HootSuite in the morning before you get out of bed just to monitor what has been said about your clients overnight. (Source) – If not first thing in the morning, this is done first thing when I walk into the office.

13. You’re afraid to go more than 15 minutes (max) without checking Twitter/Facebook/news feeds to make sure you’re not missing anything. (Source) – Typically all of these are up on my computer screen while working.

14. You rely on to-do lists (yes, plural) to get you through your day, but often don’t get to cross anything off until 4 p.m. (after managing a few surprise crises). (Source) – This is my life. Often. The daily to-do list isn’t usually done until early evening or the next day.

15. You check your smartphone before brushing your teeth. (Source) Don’t act like you other PR/Advertising people don’t do the same thing.

16. Your friends think you’re crazy for your undeniable attachment to your social networks.  – Not completely true as most of my friends are the exact same way.

17. Client’s products are decorations on your desk. – True, well at least some of the work we’ve produced.

Alright PR/Advertising/Marketing Pros- which ones fall into your day to day life?

My 2012 Chick Flick

Yes. I like my chick flicks. I recently saw the preview for this one and can’t lie – it’s going to be my must see this year. I’m sure I’ll need a box of tissues to make it through the movie but it looks too good not to see.

What’s your favorite chick flick? All time fave for me – When Harry Met Sally. If that’s not perfection I don’t know what is. Best friends make the best relationships, so I’ve been told.

It’s 2012!

Happy New Year Peeps!

Hope everyone had a safe and fantastic New Year’s Weekend cause I know I did. Brief recap, shall we? I’m happy to say that vacation was wonderful and much-needed. I caught up on sleep and on errands I had to do around the house, spent time with friends and family, and shopped. All in all – not a bad staycation.

New Years Weekend was more or less fantastic. Friday brought a trip to the Art Museum, dinner at XYZ the Tavern and The 3rd Annual New Year’s Eve Eve Holla Days Festival of Awesomeness hosted by the lovely Cleveland’s a Plum and @lzone.

Seriously – thanks to those two for such an awesome party. It was great seeing tons of peeps from Twitter, blogging and friends that work in Advertising/PR. Who doesn’t love the social media world?

The bubbles were fantastic and the conversation even better.

Some of my favorite peeps – (in back) Cortney and Jennifer, (front) Alana, Alexa and I.

Sean and I

Despite what Lisa thinks, I would not classify her make-up as “drag queen-like” 😉

Chris and I finished the night off at Viaduct Lounge, which I had been dying to go to. Plus my favorite bartender in Cleveland works there.

We rang in 2012 with a quick change in plans. We met up with new friends, took a SUV limo and went to Landerhaven for a free evening out. No complaints there. Sparkles and bubbles – my favorites!

Finishing up the weekend, I could have done without the OSU losses (both of them) and the Browns loss but you have to take what you can these days in Cleveland.

I’m looking forward to 2012. My New Year’s Resolutions include: being patient in many areas of my life, working on my work-life balance, vacationing some more and loving life in the CLE! Stay tuned for what’s to come!

Year in Review

Can you believe that 2011 is over already – okay almost over? I feel like this year completely flew by. But it was a good year. A really good year. Let’s just review some of the things that happened (be warned, lots of pics!):

1. New Job. After years and years of non profit work I finally made the career switch. And I’m happy I did it. I worked my booty off this year, got promoted and am in a position that I love. Hard work pays off people.

2. New place. I’m back in my city. And thrilled to be back here. Close to friends, work and downtown. It’s perfection.

3. New friends. This year goes down as one of the best for friendships. I’ve made a ton of new, amazing friends through work (who make me laugh every single day, encourage my Starbucks habit and bring out my best work), social networking (love the group I’ve met through Twitter!) and living in Cleveland. Seriously, you guys are the best!

4. Grew closer with old friends. This was the year of reconnecting with a lot of friends actually, including two people who I hadn’t spoken to in a while. But in addition to that, the BFF and I have been closer than we’ve been in years. I love our weekly phone calls and am so glad those have started back up.

5. Cleveland social life. I loved going out this year in Cleveland. There were so many great events to attend including the Lexus event, Indians games in the Social Suite, concerts and happy hours. The social scene is one of many reasons I love Cleveland! Let’s be honest…this was a fantastic year!
