Blast From the Past

My birthday week/month was really fabulous. It was. And it kept getting better. And it got even better when I won a dinner for two as part of the Blast from the Past contest at Table 45. I’ve never been to Table 45 (I love Zach Bruell restaurants though). I was so excited to win and it came on the tails of my birthday and in the middle of my literally 14 days out in a row (or more).

Smitten in CLE was a fantastic date and the company at the Chef’s Table was fabulous. And every course was fantastic, as well as the accompanying wine (six glasses of wine made me a very happy girl).

Being able to watch the Chef and his staff hard at work at feeding us, explaining every course and technique, while our host provided glass upon glass of wine was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I can’t explain half of what we had but it was all amazing – enjoy the pics and get yourself to Table 45!

A Sunday with Football

In the spring! What?!

Yep – today was our first BvBCLE practice. And I was so excited – not only to play football but also to meet some of the girls that are playing. And let’s just say our team is going to have a blast over the next few weeks while we prep for the game on June 16th.

We practiced today at Force Sports Complex in Rocky River (which ironically is where my after-prom was back in 2001). After a quick run down of the rules and meeting our teammates and coaches, it was time for some drills. I hadn’t played football since college but our coaches are amazing and gave us all some great tips.

And while yes, our team currently is smaller than the brunettes, don’t think that Team Blonde isn’t ready for the competition. We have awesome coaches and will spend the next few weeks getting prepped to show up on the 16th.

Post-practice beers and lunch was called for at Rocky River Brewing Company. It was great to get to meet some new friends and catch up with others.

So while the Browns may have just made their draft picks (which I like some and dislike one), Team Blonde is on the field getting ready!

Note: There’s still time to join our team – join soon so you can make all the practices and get to meet our team! And consider donating here

Fabulous Friday: TEDxCLE

Remember me posting about TEDxCLE: The Maker Class? Well I didn’t get tickets and was totally bumming. But due to the fact that I have an awesome job and awesome coworkers, I was able to go to my first TEDxCLE and support some awesome, inspiring Cleveland peeps.

First off, hats off to shark&minnow on a job well done. Great speakers and great venue.

Quick wrap-up on some of my favorite:

From NASA: Tom Benson. Here’s what I loved – he talked about being a creative person and he’s not in the “typical” creative field. His ten characteristics of being a creative person: expertise, enviornment, timing, synthesis, ah-ha, guts, persistent, luck, interests, muse. A great reminder to all of us – creative field or not – you are going to encounter resistance. It’s all about being persistent though.

My most favorite – Dar Caldwell. I love people with great big ideas that most of us would never even dream of and definitely would never have the balls to follow through with. I love the passion and I love the love for the city of Cleveland and entrepreneurs that our city has. And we have some amazing ones. Valerie Mayen. Chris Hodgeson. As a community – what can we do to help these people who are willing to take a risk and do something completely different.

Another favorite: Mort Epstein. If you’ve been in the city of Cleveland anytime in the last oh, 30 years, you’ve seen some of Mort’s artwork. It’s innovative, colorful and creative. As a girl who loves design, it was so awesome to hear his stories behind the art.

It was pretty much a fabulous Friday last Friday thanks to this event. Be sure to keep your eyes open for some of the talks when they go online.

Somebody I Used to Know

I love this song. But even more I adore this version. Thanks to The Daily Balance for getting me addicted to Jake Coco (I owe you for playing the music in the cube behind me!)

I Heart Advertising

Being an advertising girl, I often catch myself watching the TV commercials more than some TV shows. I mean, the Super Bowl is like the Oscars for us advertising people.

So when this commercial came on the other day, I literally stopped and watched the entire thing. Everything came together perfectly. The song. The storyline. It’s just so stinkin’ adorable.

Team Blonde

You may be wondering how you can help support BvBCLE without actually participating in the event (though we still need some players – come join Team Blonde!). Well we have the answer for you.

This week come join us at one of my personal favorite bars, Around the Corner in Lakewood, for a Blondes vs. Brunettes Happy Hour. Battle of the Bombshells begins at 6pm. Expect Happy Hour prices (which are always a great deal at ATC), raffles and a ton of fun. It’s a great way to become involved without actually stepping foot onto a football field. And let’s be honest – I know a lot of you out there have a hard time turning down a fun happy hour (myself included…).

Check out: BvBCLE for more information or to sign up to participate! Hope to see you all at ATC on Wednesday!

My Rock Dream

I’ve stated before that I have a super eclectic taste in music. I can go from country to rock within minutes. So when I had the chance to attend the 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony there was no way I was going to turn it down.

Yes, the seats were up high. Yes, Public Theater was not made for women in heels. But good freaking Lord was this one of the best nights of my life. The artists. The people watching. The Cleveland love.

Green Day. Sara Barellis. John Mellencamp. Small Faces/Faces (sans Rod the Bod). Kid Rock. Travis McCoy. The Roots. Chuck D and LL Cool J. Beastie Boys. Chris Rock. Guns N’ Roses (sans Axl). Red Hot Chili Peppers.

That was my night.

The best way to describe the evening comes from Katherine Boyd from Q104 who (via Twitter) said: “Dude, last night was like a totally awesome hook-up. Can’t stop thinking about it. Ended too soon never to be seen again.”

I really thought the show would only go till 11-11:30…boy was I wrong. 6 hours later (near 2am) and we were just heading back to the hotel to get our car. The energy at Cleveland Public Theater was electric. Especially at the end of the night when we knew that Beastie Boys, GNR and Red Hot Chili Peppers were getting ready to be inducted.

Green Day started the show off performing Letter Bomb and getting the crowd ready for a night of rock (and dropping more F bombs in a 3 minute timespan than a Browns fan). “This isn’t a party. This is a celebration.” And that it was.

It seemed like each artist had a story (or stories) to tell about the person they were inducting that otherwise we may not have heard. Whether it be John M. saying how he was inspired, or better yet – stole from Donovan, Bette Midler telling about walking with Laura Nyro and their conversations, Chuck D. sharing how the Beastie Boys are his and LL Cool J’s role models, and Billie Joe saying how when he first saw GNR he thought one of them may end up in jail or dead.

By 11pm, you could feel that the theater was ready to rock and just in time for the Beastie Boys tribute. And I loved every freaking minute. It would have obviously been amazing if Adam Y. could have attended but Travis McCoy, Kid Rock and The Roots did an awesome job performing some of the Beastie’s hits, including Sabatoge.

Yes, there were many boos for Axl Rose. Which sucks but Axl you did it to yourself. It’s too bad that the band couldn’t put their beef behind them for the night to recognize where they came from. Cause rock just wouldn’t be the same without this band. But it was awesome to see Slash on stage, playing the riff to Sweet Child O’ Mine. And to see Steven Adler (sober?) behind a drum set. As Duff said “I don’t know if it matters who’s here tonight, because it’s about the music that band created.” (p.s. I think I have a little crush on Slash.)

I was disappointed when I saw some people leave after the GNR performance (including the guy two rows ahead of us with his Team Axl tshirt on) but I was so so so ready for Red Hot Chili Peppers. And Chris Rock doing the intro – dying of laughter. He was amazing. Who knew he was a fan of the Chili Peppers and saw them at a club back in the day, when he thought he was supposed to be seeing Grandmaster Flex. Flea tearing up while thanking his mom – LOVED. You can see that this band is so humbled to be inducted. And when they took the stage I couldn’t wait. I was praying they would be performing Give It Away and that they did.

At the end of the night, RHCP invited performers on stage with them (including Slash!) to perform Stevie Wonder’s Higher Ground. That jam session alone is reason to make sure that you are in front of a tv on May 5th watching HBO (which somehow they are going to get that show down to 2.5 hours – how I have no idea.)

John Kuntz, The PD

Cleveland is a city that was made for an event like the Induction. The Rock Hall staff went all out the last 11 days and made last evening one that I will never forget. I can seriously die a happy girl – there’s no doubt that this was one of the moments that I will one day be able to tell my kids about.

And obviously I’m already planning on attending again in 3 years.

(The Rock Hall Induction will air on HBO on May 5th. I highly suggest watching it. And who has HBO that wants me to come over and tell you all the amazingness of the night that HBO won’t be showing?!?)

Where To Begin?

I called it. Best weekend ever. And I don’t even know where to begin. I have lots to write about including good news from Thursday, a fabulous Friday, and living out my rock star dreams at The Rock Hall Induction on Saturday. Too much for just one post.

My weekend actually got started on Thursday. I took half a day to get some appointments out of the way, including my least favorite – the thyroid cancer doctor appointment. These happen every 6 months, with 4 appointments for blood work during the year and another 2 for ultrasounds. That’s right – for the past two years I’ve been to one doctor 8 times a year. Thank Jesus for insurance. In prep for the appointment, I also scheduled a spray tan after to cheer me up. That’s how much I dread these appointments. But surprise! Appointments will only be once a year as my doctor officially said I’m cancer free and don’t need to stress anymore. He gave me the go ahead to just stay on my day to day medication and just be aware if I feel any symptoms but said the likelihood of the cancer returning is very very very slim. Yay! So I not only treated myself to a spray tan, but also to a new dress from Express.

Friday was my actual birthday and I totes felt the love. Thanks so much to all my twitter/facebook/real life friends for all the shoutouts! I was fortunate to be able to celebrate at lunch with my account team and work friends where we laughed a ton and they, of course, embarrassed me by having the “torch” brought out.

Post-work a group headed over to grab dinner at Great Lakes Brewing Company, cause let’s be honest – if I didn’t eat, there was a strong shot I wouldn’t make it past 10pm. Thanks to Roommate, her hubby, SmitteninCLE and her hubby, Joe, Adam, Cody, Sam, Madeline and Candice for all the birthday love! Drinks continued at Riverwood where some past and current co-workers, high school friends, Alana and Dean joined in (happy you both put pants on to come join).

(Thanks for having my back there Alana – ha!)

Roommate kept track throughout the night of the drink consumption…which I was reminded of Saturday morning when I rolled over and saw it on my hand. Let’s just say I was hurting on Saturday and realized that I can’t party the way I did when I was 21.

Saturday will get it’s own post because the Rock Hall Induction was just that amazing. I really don’t even know how I’ll begin to describe it but tune in this week as I attempt to.

So here we go year 29 – let’s do this.

Fabulous Friday: The Last Year

It’s officially my 29th birthday. I hear this is going to be one of the best years yet. And thanks to some fabulous friends (including The BFF, his wife, my girl best friend, Smitten in Cle, WhyCLE, PoiseinParma and a million other friends) I’ve been reassured that the 30’s are the best time of your life. So here’s hoping so!

Time for some reflection. A year older. A year wiser. All that jazz.

A lot has changed the past year.

I changed jobs. And now work with some of my closest friends and love the fact that I know I will laugh every day at my job. And that I’m learning a lot. Advertising/PR was definitely the right career change for me.

I moved. Back to being a city girl, which makes me unbelievably happy on so many levels. I’m spending more time Downtown, enjoying the Cleveland restaurant and bar scene.

I’ve met some amazing new friends (thank you Twitter and Cleveland Blogger Community, as well as work). Made some changes in friendships and what not  but it’s all for the better.

Time to cheers to the past year and prep for the next one with dinner and drinks (bubbles will be had) tonight, followed up with the Rock Hall Induction. Full recap will be coming after the hangover is gone.

So, here’s hoping 29 is as fantastic, if not more so, than 28 was. After all…it is the last birthday I’m celebrating.
