Jump Back Two Spaces

One of my favorite events of the past year was Playhouse Square’s Jump Back Ball. Food, drinks, casino games and hours of dancing made for an evening of fun. It’s crazy that we’re already all thinking and talking about JBB 2013!

Jump Back Ball 2013 will be held on February 23, 2013 at Playhouse Square. If you haven’t attended an event at Playhouse Square, get ready. It’s absolutely gorgeous and one of the best Cleveland landmarks.

This year’s theme for the Cleveland Black-Tie event? Jump Back 2 Spaces! That’s right – board games. Think of all your favorites: Clue, Monopoly, Candyland, Risk, Scrabble. I can already imagine some of the excellent costumes and outfits that will be worn (last year I waited to get my dress…this year, I will shop early!)

So you want to attend, right? Well, to get the best prices for this year’s event, mark Thursday, November 15th on your calendar. Swing by Market Garden Brewery to celebrate the Hottest Party in Cleveland from 5:30-7:30 and be the first to secure your tickets to this amazing event. There will be complimentary apps and drink specials (plus, you can have Festivus Ale to ring in the holiday season).

When you attend Thursday’s event, you will be able to get tickets at the lowest price that tickets will be. Tickets will be $135 each at the Kickoff Event with no handling fees (or $110 if you are a Playhouse Square Partner – another benefit to joining – you can join Partners at the kickoff party!)

The event has sold out in previous years so be sure to get your tickets now! More information on Jump Back Ball is available here.

Grab some friends, start thinking of what you will be wearing and make plans to jump 2 spaces back at JBB22!

(Disclosure: I am a Playhouse Square Partner and was invited to blog for the upcoming Jump Back Ball. In exchange for blogging about the event, I will be receiving one general admission ticket. However, JBB was already on my calendar and I can’t wait to attend again in 2013!)

The Centennial Celebration

November 3rd, 2012 will probably be my favorite memory from 2012. Everything about the day was perfect. From getting ready with a good friend from high school, to hanging out with Leah and Jessica and other girlfriends throughout the night; I could not have asked for a better day to celebrate the Centennial of the West Side Market.

Leah and I made a fantastic decision in cabbing it over to the Market for the gala around 6:30. It was such a different experience going to the Market on a Saturday night, dressed up, in heels that were so not comfortable. Usually my trips to WSM are Saturday mornings, in comfy clothes ready to do grocery shopping. Our excitement level increased throughout the day and when we pulled up to check-in, it was at a high to say the least. Walking down the produce arcade and seeing some of my Cleveland favorites (Rocco…Chris…Brian…)behind the stands, preparing food for us, made me so proud of our Cleveland chefs. The time, energy and resources that they put into this event didn’t go unnoticed.

Jess and I, an interview on TV20 with Leah, the ladies, and Erin and I outside of the office

After Jess’s interview with TV20, we headed into the Market House to wander, try more food and while debating our next stop, looked to our left where Michael Symon and his wife Lizzie were serving up food, talking to guests and signing autographs. Michael was sweet (just like last week!), chatted with us, took pictures and signed our programs. Again – bucket list – check! Michael’s love for the city just warms my heart.

Rocco, Ruhlman and Goodman with their BBQ pork, Chris perfecting his dish, and just hanging with Michael (again!)

While heading over to the event tent for the program and more beverages, we ran into another favorite chef and the other co-chair along with Michael Symon, Jonathon Sawyer. Again – the love he has for Cleveland and the amount of time and energy he put into this event….well, it just makes me proud to know him and his wife.

With the Sawyers – Chef and Amelia are the best, The Hodge’s crew (Chris, Catie and Reagan) and with Carla Hall

The food we were served:
April Bloomfield (The Spotted Pig) – chicken liver parfait with madiera jelly on toast
Britt-Marie Culey (Coquette Patisserie) – local rutabaga & carrot mousse with ohio maple and ligonberry gelee
Summer Genetti (Lola) – dark chocolate gluten free cupcake with salted caramel ganache and chocolate covered potato chip
Carla Hall (The Chew) – grilled gruyere cheese sandwich on raisin walnut toast with butternut squash soup
Chris Hodgson (Hodge’s) – miso glazed hanger steak (which I’ve had before and is one of my most favorite things ever….menu item soon Chris? Please?!)
Paul Kahan (The Publican) – pork loin with albacore, pickled baby peaches and greens
Jenn Louis (Lincoln Restaurant) – buckwheat gnocchi with jacobsen oregonian salt
Paul Minnillo and Matt Mytro (Flour) – tagliatelle ragu, alla bolognese
Michael Ruhlman and Brian Goodman – eastern caroline pork bbq (another top dish for me)
Jonathon Sawyer, Matt Danko, Brian Reilly (The Greenhouse Tavern and Noodlecat) – rasted capon with foie gras and caviar steam bun
Michael Solomonov and Erin O’Shae (Percy Street Barbeque) – smoked brisket sandwich (as good as it sounds)
Michael Symon (Lola, Lolita) – root vegetable ravioli (in my top 3 for the night)
Marc Ventri and Jeff Michaud (Alla Spina) – mortadella hot dogs with spicy pickles
Rocco Whalen (Fahrenheit) – lobster tempura
Eric Williams and Tom Burke (Momocho) – crusted tuna toastada with candied jalapeno and blood orange marmalade
Andrew Zimmern (Bizarre Foods) – chinese braised spare ribs

Reaching the event tent, we headed right over for more signature drinks (which all were delicious) and prepared for the program, hosted by WKYC’s Kris Pickle and Russ Mitchell. Featuring speeches by Councilman Martin Sweeney and Matt Zone, and one of my favorites – Councilman Joe Cimperman. There were at least two times during his speech where I started to tear up.

Co-Chairs Symon and Sawyer, Councilman Cimperman, Auction Time and Carla looking for a higher bid

My favorite quote from the night: “Food is Love. Tonight is Love. There are no hurdles to the next 100 years.” If you want to see a person passionate about Cleveland, Ohio City and the West Side Market – look no further than Councilman Cimperman.

The chefs from the evening gathered on stage, both local chefs and national chefs, to toast to the previous 100 years and the next 100 years. Chefs Symon and Sawyer were up next with their words. Chef Symon mentioned that while some of the chefs were unable to make it due to Hurricane Sandy, after making some calls, more chefs actually signed on to help out than originally were expected. The surprise chefs included Chef Waxman and Chef Carla Hall (The Chew!).

The quote of the night from Chef Symon: “The best thing about Cleveland is that almost everybody that lives here is from here”.

Billy Harris served as the auction emcee, raising an additional $50,000+ on some fantastic auction items (trust me, if I could have bid on some of these, I totally would have): an After-hours trip to the West Side Market, a Trip to Philadelphia including dinner at Alla Spina and lunch at Brauhaus, a Driftwood Private Party Package including dinner at all of the Driftwood Restaurants and a private party with chefs Chris Hodgson and Scott David Kuhn, a Cleveland Getaway with dinner at Lolita and suites at both a Cavs and Browns game, A Chew Up NYC package with Chef Symon, dinner at Chef Waxman’s Barbuto and a visit to The Chew. Billy made sure to get the most he could out of the audience.

Lounge Kitty, Carla Hall dancing with the girls, Ashley and I hanging out, and Butcher’s Brew

Post-auction, Lounge Kitty was back up to provide more entertainment and plenty of music for dancing. Our group of girls were back on the floor, despite sore feet, dancing away and singing our hearts out with the lead singer. Looking over to our right we saw Carla Hall, who saw our circle of girls and came over and danced in the middle of all of us, making a memory that none of us will forget any time soon. Some of my favorite quotes that came out during dancing included “This feels like my birthday – except better!” “This is like the BEST wedding reception I’ve ever been to!”.

Plenty of friends at WSM100 – Leah, Jess, Joe G. and Chris

Of course, in between all the program, we had to hit up the Great Lake’s Brewing Company commemorative brew – The Butcher’s Brew. The lager was delicious and was also one of the gifts given to all of the attendees (though I won’t be drinking that one – the 20 oz. is too nice of a gift). We each also received a commemorative print that I cannot wait to frame and either place in my office or in my “wall of Cleveland” in my home.

Post-gala, we were invited to the after-party hosted by Noodlecat. It was a great after-party, allowing for more mingling with some of the chefs and allowing us to all catch up with one another some more. Chef Sawyer and his team provided awesome snacks and drinks (and jello shots…).

The afterparty: Coworkers (Jess and Kelsey), Billy Harris, Leah and I (again) and Catie and I

I can’t say thank you enough to all of the chefs, the vendors at the West Side Market, sponsors, city politicians, and so many donors that made this evening one that I will never forget.

Cheers to 100 Years!

This is going to be the first in at least two posts about the West Side Market 100th celebration weekend because it was just that amazing. Really.

(image cleveland.about.com)

After Hurricane Sandy ruined the week a bit, causing a little more ruckus than I would have preferred, I was more than ready for the weekend. Even just being at work on Friday, I was antsy and counting down the hours to the weekend. It was a big one afterall. Starting with the Cavs game with Kimberly. Yes, they lost. By a lot. But the upside was having great drinks, Bar Symon food and club seats. Plus Kimberly and I had plenty to catch up and discuss.

Post-Cavs, we headed over to Crop for the People’s Party. Organized by a few of the local chefs, the People’s Party was another opportunity to celebrate the 100 year birthday of the West Side Market and raise additional funds for renovations to the Market.

Crop was packed (with more than 1,000 people!), the food was around every corner, music was blaring at each level and the drinks were flowing. I was excited to run into so many friends, including Jen, Ashley, Leah, Joe G. and Kenny. Everyone was there not just to have a good time, great food and drinks, but also because of a genuine love of the West Side Market and Ohio City. It was a great reminder of how much I love this city and how happy I am that I decided against venturing west after graduating.

Cheers WSM!

Me and My Girls: Leah and Kimberly

Staying out till 2am that night probably wasn’t the smartest idea, but was totally worth it!

Bucket List Item – Check

I’ve been nothing but shy about my love of Michael Symon. Celebrity Crush. Favorite Chef. That man owns my heart. Last week, after seeing a few tweets, I knew I had to make plans to go see Michael at his book signing for Carnivore. Yes, I even told a client about it (I provided plenty of laughs on a video shoot that day).

My dear friend (and coworker) was immediately in when I mentioned it to her. On Friday we made plans to leave, stand in line, purchase the new book and more or less make fools out ourselves. During the day we tweeted Michael (and he responded….which meant our coworkers heard squeals). When we stood in line and Caroline saw Michael for the first time, she squealed, hit me and yelled “that’s him!”

And our lives were made.

Clambakin’ and Bubbles

Fall in Cleveland tends to mean a few things: gorgeous leaves, fun tailgates and clambakes. Saturday, after a low-key Friday night, a group of friends gathered together at one of our favorite locations in the city for a clambake filled with food, beer, drinks and more than enough laughs.

After much discussion (really none at all), Monina, Kimberly and I all signed up for the clambake at Hodge’s and not far behind were some of my favorite FOX8 anchors and reporters, Mark Zinni and Melissa Reid. Good thing we were put at the back table. Because after a few Bell’s Brewery beers and not seeing each other in about a month, the conversation was nonstop, the laughter happened so much that tears were rolling down our face and the food and beer just added to the afternoon.

Yes, it’s blurry but I love this group…thanks for rolling up and joining us Mark 😉

Kimberly and her 5lbs of (delicious) pulled pork

Lots of laugh and lots of fun

Happy this lovely lady joined the weekend festivities!

Just the sweetest!

After some more wine and girl talk, I was more than ready to continue the weekend festivities with the new Sunday Funday tradition. This weekend the spot to be was Market in Rocky River for the Bloody Mary Showdown. Instead of joining in with the Bloody Mary Showdown, Catie and I had this instead:

Mimosa Kit, yes please.

We, of course, supported the Hodge’s Cleveland team with their submission into the Bloody Mary Showdown (Beau was recently named Cleveland Magazine’s Best of Cleveland Best Bartender so we thought for sure he had this one in the bag too…) There’s always next year though!

Prepping

It got our vote!

All in all, another fun weekend in The CLE with great food, great drinks and even better friends.

Fall Fun in Cleveland

Nothing like a quick change of plans. Despite not feeling well, when my coworkers needed an extra person to attend Best of Cleveland (thrown by Cleveland Magazine), I knew I needed to join. After a quick change (I took casual Friday a little too far this past Friday…oops), a couple glasses of wine, our group of 8 was off to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

It was a gorgeous (chilly) night but inside the Rock Hall we had an absolute blast. We sang along with the Journey cover band, tasted plenty of drinks and food and made our way into VIP (I love our team. End of Story). One of the things I love – having coworkers that absolutely are a blast to be around.

Congrats to the Hodge’s Crew on being included in the Best Of – including Best Bartender Beau!

Post-Best of Cleveland, we headed to Hodge’s for drinks, snacks and more laughs (thank you Gulley for the delicious new drink that will be my fall go-to).

Saturday brought a needed day-in and a needed night-in with a close friend. “The Last Dinner” as we called it, with wine, pizza and additional treats made for a great night. I love good female friends who really get you. It’s totally refreshing.

Which also leads into my Sunday – church and brunch with Catie. A new Sunday tradition? We heart mimosas at Sweet Melissa’s. After a crazy, hectic week, this weekend was exactly what I needed. And It ended with scheduling a last-minute November vacation.

Dallas – here I come.

A WSM Celebration

Like a little rain was going to stop Clevelanders from coming out and celebrating the 100th year of the West Side Market. Yes, I joined with many other Clevelanders to celebrate the Centennial. The celebration included a parade, vendors lining West 25th and, for the first time in a decade, the Market was open on a Sunday. Needless to say, the day was set up for a Sunday Funday.

image: wsm100.org

While originally, I had plans to lay low at the Market with a friend, that quickly changed after meeting up with another group of friends. Brunch at Touch Supper Club was followed by a quick walk in the rain and cold over to SOHO for an afternoon of hot apple cider with rum (totally a clutch move there), Browns, laughs and just good times with great people. And to think the Browns were off to such a great start….(not that I was surprised at the outcome…I know, that sounds bad). One of the best parts of the day? Running into so many great friends who were all out celebrating the 100th!

Afternoon drinks with Catie and Joe G

hot apple cider. good friends. good food. sunday funday.

Post-SOHO included a stop for some beers at Nano Brew and one more at ABC the Tavern where I was able to finally meet Katherine from Q104 in real life.

Such a fun day with this girl (and a photo bomb in the background…)

Finally met!

And now the countdown begins for the West Side Market Gala (even though I don’t have a dress yet…)

Happy 100th West Side Market! Looking for many, many more years and visits to the Market!

Post-Rolling

Friday night, despite the rain and cold, I was very excited to be joining the Hunger Network for Rolling on the River at Windows on the River. Not only was I joined by one of my best friends, I was fortunate enough to have a group of a girlfriends that were also attending.

The crowd was happy with drinks, yummy food provided by Windows on the River, entertained by a great band and fantastic emcee. I can’t speak highly enough about what a great job the committee did. The event was smoothly from start to finish and featured casino games (which I actually didn’t participate in….helllloooooo….I’ve lost more than enough money at the Horseshow).

The Booze Boat that I wanted so badly.

Of course we took a pic with Elvis….what?!

Monina, Allan Fee and I. He made our night!

If you haven’t checked into the Hunger Network yet, you should. Minus being a fantastic nonprofit, they offer a lot of ways to get involved.

Disclosure: In return for blogging and promoting this event, I was provided with two tickets to Rolling on the River. As always, all opinions are my own.

On a Serious Note

The past few weeks or so, I’ve been seriously missing a friend. A friend that literally every childhood memory of mine includes. We grew up a block away from each other and were friends from 3 years old and on. We were in Daisies, Brownies (you know…Girl Scouts), we went to the same schools (preschool through half of high school), had birthday parties together and performed in every school production in elementary school. Up until high school, we were together more often than not. Many of the pictures my parents have of me growing up include her. She was the kind of friend every girl deserves to have.

During high school, we got distant, which happens. We ran into each other one day, a couple years after college, and she seemed happy. Back to her old self after struggling for a few years. While we weren’t as close, there’s just a comfort level of having a best friend that knew you that well for that many years. We exchanged phone numbers that day with the promise of getting together for dinner and drinks soon.

Then, one day after work – less than a month after seeing her, I got the phone call that no one wants to get from a mutual friend. She had committed suicide. In the backyard of her childhood home (where we played…where I got my first scar – after we both decided jumping off the roof sounded like fun – where we girl talked…listened to Ace of Base and laughed harder than I’ve ever laughed). I remember that day like it was yesterday. I’ve never heard the whole story or read the note, but I know this once bright, sweet girl was torn so far down by people and situations, that she didn’t feel like her life was worth enough. But it was. She made so many people happy. She was the best hair stylist I had ever met. She was a friend. A daughter. A coworker. And she cared more about people than I think most people even knew.

I always keep a picture of her and I in my purse and carry it with me every single day. And I miss her. Every. Single. Day.

With that said, September was Suicide Prevention Month and I missed posting about it. I feel like a lot of people think that suicide happens generally among teenagers. But she was 24, had a job and was on her way. If you know someone that may be considering suicide, there is help. The Suicide Prevention Education Alliance has resources and trained counselors available to help.

I wish she was here still. There are days where I wish I could call her up. Walk around the corner and climb onto her swing set (where we would stay for hours at a time and have some of our best conversations.

I wish I had been there to talk to her one more time. To sit in the backyard like we had 15-20 years earlier. To cheer her up from whatever had her down. And to laugh the way we used to.

Life in short. Love deeply. Remind your friends that you cherish them. Every. Single. Day.
