Fall Faves

I absolutely love Fall. The weather, the colors and everything that there is to do in the CLE. I’m totally bummed that I haven’t been able to do everything I’ve wanted so far. But here are a few of my most favorite things about the CLE in the Fall:

1. The Browns. Clearly, you knew this one was coming. Fall just reminds me of early Sunday mornings with friends…the smell of Muni Lot (HA!) and wearing layers to head off to the game…perfection!

2. Boo at the Zoo. Cleveland Zoo mixed with Fall – it’s just too good to be true! Don’t worry – there’s still time to make it out to the park…I wish I would have made it this year. This is a great family fun activity.

3. Mapleside Farms. This reminds me of childhood. I can’t wait when I’m married and have little ones of my own to take them out to Mapleside for the traditional pumpkin and apple picking. (Not to mention: I’m dying to make it to a wine tasting here!) Yes, even this city girl loves going out to the country.

4. The Metroparks in the Fall. Just driving through the Park system is fun. The colors are amazing and it’s great to be out enjoying our unbelievable park.

What are your “to do’s” during the Fall season?

Trick or Treat

It’s right around the corner…Halloween! Usually, it’s not my favorite holiday but I’ve come up with some pretty awesome costumes for the upcoming weekend. That’s right – more than one. One will be for our office party on Friday and Saturday I’ll be attending a party. However, the office costume may take the cake. There’s a group of us going which makes it even better. Both will be fun, easy and comfortable. Really – that was my goal this year, especially because of what our Halloween party is going to be this year at the office (pictures to follow!)

Last year, I went as a Browns fan (after not originally wanting to go to a costume party). That year, my favorite costume from a friend was “The Situation….in 10 years”. That’s right, beer belly, Ed Hardy tee and the hair. It was hilarious.

What’s been your favorite costume that you’ve worn?

Is it for You?

I love my city. I can say this over and over again. Right after college I seriously considered a move with job opportunities in Dayton and Columbus. I even looked to the Windy City after living there for a year. But my heart brought me back to Cleveland and has kept me here since.

I love this video – it shows so many people who feel the same way I do about this city – the life, the passion, the food, the music, the drama, the hustle and bustle and the love. The opportunities and options I have here in Cleveland are endless and I know this is where I want to continue my career, one day marry and have a family.

It’s my city. Is it for you?

Appreciate

In the midst of the not best week ever (continuing from last week), I’m trying to remind myself of things in my life to appreciate so here we go:

1. Health. Cancer-free for just under two years. Working to figure this thyroid thing out pretty much on a month to month basis but still – better than that cancer that was living in my thyroid.

2. The BFF. 15 years of friendship and memories. This week I was reminded of my favorite BFF dating story which literally took me back 15 years and caused me to go into a fit of giggles. Yes, giggles. And then tonight after a quick ten minute call, he literally called back for an hour chat session to “talk it out”, like we usually do. In the midst of that conversation, we laughed and he reminded me that I always have a place “on his team”. Just that short sentence is making my week better.

3. A job I love.

4. Family that encourage and support me – even in my not brightest moments.

5. Coworkers that make me laugh. And make me forget about my issues that at the moment seem huge, but in reality are just that – issues.

6. Friends to encourage me in my dark moments and just let me vent.

7. Money in my bank account, which equals shopping which always cheers me up (unfortunately I’m not the type of girl that has shopper’s

Ever Have…

a day, or a few days or better yet a week that seemed to be completely out of your control?

That’s where I’m at peeps.

I’m a girl who likes to be in control. Know what’s going on. Plan. I hate being disappointed and disappointing others. I know I create unrealistic expectations and I have a hard time letting go of those. I hate being thrown a curve ball and I feel like they are coming in left and right this week and I’m absolutely exhausted because of it. Mostly emotionally exhausted but tired nonetheless. I feel myself losing sleep because I, being the control freak that I am, have a hard time separating my life and putting things away for a few hours.

So instead, I stress. And worry. And yes, I realize how completely unhealthy this is (especially for a girl less than 2 years under being cancer free).

I’m totally in a funk for lack of a better word. I’m emotional and lonely and disappointed and unhappy and not feeling like myself.

And I’ve seriously tried everything to de-funk myself. I’ve shopped. Drank some wine. Went for a run in Edgewater Park. Baked. Cleaned. Wrote. Vented to The BFF. And nothing is working.

Advice time: When you are in a funk what do you do?

A Little Pink

I’m a girl who loves her pink. I mean, loves it. One thing I dislike though – pink jerseys. However, during the month of October I say rock it out. Wear all the pink you possibly can. And remember those close to you that you may have lost to cancer, specifically breast cancer, or may one day have to be standing next to when they are diagnosed.

I lost a very close friend last year to breast cancer. Watching her struggle was one of the worst experiences I’ve had. There was absolutely nothing we could do as her friends, besides be by her side when she had the diagnosis of Stage 4 breast cancer.

In the months to come, she taught so many of us about life and struggles. She was a consistent friend – texting me, emailing me and asking me about my cancer struggle. I can still hear her laugh. Still have her texts – reminding me that it’s okay to have a drink two weeks before my cancer surgery – and still find myself going to her Facebook page.

After losing her, I made a promise that especially after my own diagnosis, I would be much more aware and cautious. I wouldn’t put off cancer screenings (though I will admit I joked about it a few weeks ago to coworkers and got some dirty looks due to that bad joke about insurance). And I’d learn how to do self exams.

So ladies: check ’em. If you are over 20, you should be checking once a mont. Simple steps. Just a few minutes – once a month. A simple reminder of when to do a self-exam: first of the month or a couple of days after your period (sorry, guys!) If you have’t performed a SBE (Self Breast Exam), talk to your OB/GYN for tips and examples. Here are a few steps on how to perform your SBE. (Taken from National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.)

Taking a few minutes to do a breast self-exam a minimum of once a month can make a lifetime of difference. Nearly 70% of all breast cancers are found through self-exams and with early detection the 5-year survival rate is 98%. If you find a lump, schedule an appointment with your doctor, but don’t panic—8 out of 10 lumps are not cancerous. For additional peace of mind, call your doctor whenever you have concerns

In the Shower
Fingers flat, move gently over every part of each breast. Use your right hand to examine the left breast, left hand for the right breast. Check for any lump, hard knot, or thickening. Carefully observe any changes in your breasts.

Before a Mirror
Inspect your breasts with your arms at your sides. Next, raise your arms high overhead.

Look for any changes in the contour of each breast, a swelling, a dimpling of the skin, or changes in the nipples. Then rest your palms on your hips and press firmly to flex your chest muscles. Left and right breasts will not exactly match—few women’s breasts do.

Lying Down
Place a pillow under your right shoulder and put your right arm behind your head. With the fingers of your left hand flat, press your right breast gently in small circular motions, moving vertically or in a circular pattern covering the entire breast.

Use light, medium, and firm pressure. Squeeze the nipple; check for discharge and lumps. Repeat these steps for your left breast.

Innovator and Visionary

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.”

Today, we lost a man that changed the world – literally – Steve Jobs. Even if you are not a Mac person, you have to recognize how he’s changed technology and the way we communicate. He knew what we wanted, before we wanted it.

Rest in Peace and deepest condolences to his family, friends and Apple.

Here’s to you Steve Job – one of the Crazy Ones.

Fill in the Blanks

I’m lacking motivation to be creative. So I took this from a blog I follow:

1. My current obsession is: organizing my life – personal and work.

2. Text messages make me happy.

3. My greatest strength is my ability to organize.

4. Not stressing over little things is my greatest weakness.

5. My life is: almost where I want it to be. Just missing one thing in my opinion.

6. In high school I was not as outgoing as I am now.

7. When I’m super tired, I either am super loopy or super cranky.

Today is Your Day

This weekend, in the midst of cleaning and doing laundry, I turned into the Shania Twain show: Why Not? Essentially, Shania was on her own “Eat, Pray, Love” journey and working her way through her many emotional issues – parents dying and husband cheating on her with her best friend. In the midst of all of that, Shania literally lost her voice and was scared to death of performing.

Her song, “Today is your day” came out of the midst of all of her struggles and I have fallen in love with this song. It’s great to see and hear Shania overcoming everything she’s been going through the last few years.
